Berlin is in Germany

Movie tip for the spring

To be honest, the Arte-edition of Hannes Stöhrs‘ film “Berlin is in Germany” (2001) doesn’t look too exciting. But it turned out to be a great film; the easter present from my little brother really does deserve the 7.5 / 10 stars on imdb.com !

It is a brilliant change to all the apocalyptic sci-fi movies from nowadays. And even more than that. Der Spiegel, a very well-known German magazine, had written “accurate, laconic, amusing, rapid and full of hope”. Yet, not everything has been said. The story really affects you. You feel so sorry for Jörg Schüttauf playing this role that you actually forget that the whole thing is just a story in a movie. After 11 years of prison Martin, a mechanic, is released into freedom. He returns to his old, new life. Before he was imprisoned he lived in the GDR so his new life means a lot of trouble.

There are unexpected obstacles, some reunions and also some new acquaintanceships, and in this way life just takes its course. With a wistful look, again, we see this unique, indescribable thing about Berlin.
